Music Education (B.A.) – Musical
Entrance examination
Entrance examination Musical
Dear applicants for a place in the Musical specialization of the Music Education degree program at the Institute of Music. We look forward to your applications and ask you to follow the instructions below so that we can ensure a smooth application process.
The entrance examinations in the Musical specialization are carried out in a 3-stage procedure. All rounds take place in person at the Institute of Music of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. The deadline is the current application deadline.
International applicants can find general information on admission requirements and the application process on the university’s central page How to apply.
The first round
1. Singing:
- Please prepare three musical songs with contrasting characters (e.g. up-tempo, ballad, character number, show number, chanson, etc.).
- Each song should be no longer than 2:30 minutes. Longer songs may be performed in shortened form.
- At least one of the songs should be in German.
- In addition, one of the three musical songs must be a musical scene with the elements of singing, acting and dance/movement. You can take scenes from the musical repertoire or combine your own texts with songs. The added text should be no longer than one minute. This means the musical scene can have a total length of 3:30.
- You choose the first song yourself; the jury chooses a second song. It will not necessarily be heard in full; the jury reserves the right to stop during the song. This says nothing about admission to the second round.
- If necessary, the jury will carry out exercises to test your musical aptitude.
2. Dance:
- In the first round, your skills in ballet and jazz dance are tested. The training takes place both at the barre and in the center.
- Please wear close-fitting, appropriate and neutral training clothes.
At the end of the first examination day, a selection is made for participation in the second round. About one third of the applicants are admitted to the second round.
The second round
1. Singing:
- In the second round, the jury hears the song not yet performed and chooses a second song from the applicant’s repertoire.
2. Dance:
- In the second round, your skills in ballet are tested in more depth in a training session at the barre and in the center, and in a jazz dance training session.
- Please wear close-fitting, appropriate and neutral training clothes.
3. Acting:
- For the second round, prepare two contrasting monologues in German (classical/modern).
- You can choose the roles freely. We recommend taking the playing age of the roles into account and being familiar with the plot of the whole play.
- You should know the context so that you can place the characters in it and take their biographical features into account. We expect you to be familiar with the character, their goals and emotions and the situation of the monologue.
- Please do not use texts you have written yourself.
At the end of the examination day, a selection is made for participation in the final. About half of the applicants are admitted to the final.
The final
The final extends over two days.
- On these days, tasks are set in acting and dance, and there is improvisation. All texts and songs from the first rounds are heard and worked on again by the entire board.
- In addition, on the last day there is a dance examination, an audition. This allows us to assess not only dance technique but also criteria such as expression, presence, type, energy, quality of movement, musicality, ability to learn, openness to criticism and work ethic. The choreography to be learned is new for all applicants and is rehearsed together.
- A detailed schedule will be announced the day before.
The decision on the allocation of study places is made at the end of the final.
