Studying music in Osnabrück
Pop, Jazz, Classical and Musical – the Institute of Music (IfM) offers a wide range of study options for instrumental music and voice. What makes the IfM special is that all musical styles have equal standing. This universality across styles and the ability to make artistically differentiated statements are particular concerns of the institute. Training at the IfM aims at a high quality of artistic and academic skills and abilities. Beyond that, one of the IfM’s important tasks is to make the different influences of music compatible with the digital generation, in teaching and in art.

1. The IfM’s goal: practice-oriented and innovative training
The IfM trains music educators in a particularly practice-oriented, innovative way so that they can work professionally in fields of music education and help shape their development.
2. Teaching staff from practice for learners
Based on intensive artistic development of the students (including the necessary grounding in music theory and musicology), studies at the IfM aim at a high-quality pedagogical and didactic professionalization. This particularly practice-oriented training is ensured through partnerships with the Musik- und Kunstschule der Stadt Osnabrück and other institutions (music schools, general education schools, associations ...) for observation visits and teaching internships during studies. Suitably qualified teachers from professional teaching practice are involved in the program as adjunct lecturers.
3. Multiple qualifications for students
After appropriate academic advising, the IfM makes individual combinations of multiple qualifications possible. This allows the program to meet the current requirements of professional practice and to respond flexibly to changes in the job market for music education.
4. Synergies through networking
Networking with the programs of other faculties of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences (e.g. theater pedagogy or social sciences) creates synergies in the design of the training and brings new, innovative course content.
5. Developing sustainable didactic concepts
The IfM’s core tasks include in particular developing sustainable didactic concepts, among others in class music-making, and setting up corresponding training and continuing education programs. The results of this work are presented regularly at music education forums.
6. Concept for training “junior students”
The IfM develops concepts to identify and support talent, among others by supporting pre-college training (SVA) at music schools.
7. Rooted in the region – cooperative beyond it
The IfM maintains contacts with other educational institutions in Germany as well as international contacts, and creates the basis for long-term cooperation with selected institutions in Germany and abroad.
8. Basic concept: tradition and further development
The IfM also sees itself as an institution that actively helps shape and develop the cultural life of the city and the region. For this reason, cultivating and further developing its long-standing concert and event program is part of the IfM’s profile.
