Shaping the musical of tomorrow
Musical theater is currently the only constantly changing form of music theater that, like no other theater genre, serves as an undogmatic stage and mirror for a constantly changing society. This happens, among other things, through the constant mutual influence of the various forms of music and theater. The intense interplay of styles and genres is one of the most remarkable features of this form of entertainment and presents teachers and students with ever new challenges. Singing, dancing and acting are each very demanding in concept and practice, and the aim of training at the IfM is for musical performers to become singing and dancing actors, blending the forms of performance and genres together in the best possible way.

Career prospects
Musical performers work in musicals in productions by commercial promoters and at subsidized theaters, but also in radio, comedy, cabaret, film and television and in the music industry. As this profession also includes training in acting, musical performers also work at theaters as classical actors, among other things.
The job market for musical performers and teachers in this field has undergone rapid change over the last ten years. The working reality for this group is a diverse field of work that not only challenges them as musical performers and voice teachers but also requires them to actively shape and develop this field.
The revival of the musical literature of the pre-war years also opens up a wide field of work for which musical performers are ideally suited. At that time, many composers and performers moved seemingly effortlessly between variety, film musicals, burlesque, revue forms, operetta, chanson, jazz and musicals. This flexibility shapes the profession in a special way, both on and behind the stage.
What our former students say
Niklas Roling
Music Education – Musical (B.A.)
"Studying at the IfM Osnabrück was exactly right for me. Over four years on this beautiful campus, I was taught not only skills in dance, singing and acting but also important tools of vocal pedagogy. I benefited a great deal artistically from this combination. The musical program in Osnabrück leaves room for individual learning and training goals and gave me many important experiences for working on stage."

Music Education – Musical (B.A.)
“I am very happy about my studies at the IfM in Osnabrück. I now work as a performer, voice teacher and speech therapist, and I am very grateful that Osnabrück gave me a holistic view of the art and the pedagogy behind it. My Osnabrück B.A. gave me an ideal foundation for my artistic master's degree in musical theatre at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and at the same time I can benefit from the vocal pedagogy focus in my work as a voice therapist (speech therapy). I therefore see the program's focus on the “educating artist” as very forward-looking, flexible, up to date and empowering, and I am grateful for this comprehensive program in Osnabrück.”

Music Education – Musical (B.A.)
"At the IfM I learned to work independently and take responsibility for reaching my goals. Our artistic training was less school-like than at other universities; it depended more on our own input and discipline to grasp the full variety of our studies and to benefit from it. This even made a year abroad possible for me. The collaborations with municipal theaters gave us well-protected first steps into professional life and an extended network right at the start of our careers. In hindsight, the double qualification through studying pedagogy is also a gift that helps us and makes many things easier. Anyone who studies at the IfM is a doer afterwards – and that is what the musical industry needs and values."
