Jazzpilot*innen – Deutscher Jazzpreis for alumnus Jan Monazahian

Jan Mohazahian won the Deutscher Jazzpreis 2025 in the category “Music Outreach and Participation” with the Deutsche Jazzunion project “Jazzpilot*innen”.

After studying visual anthropology at the University of Göttingen, he studied jazz flute at the Institute of Music from 2017 to 2023. Since 2020, the Jazzpilot*innen have been committed to breaking new ground in jazz outreach. Their goal is to bring jazz and improvised music together with civic education and to use a symbiosis of both fields for innovative methods and outreach ideas. This makes it possible to reach children, young people and adults with and without access to music lessons.

But the Jazzpilot*innen focus not only on the audience but also on musicians who want to pass on their music in a practical and playful way: from training and advice on civic education and music outreach to event guidelines and their own teaching materials, they offer a free and constantly growing pool of knowledge in the field of jazz outreach.

With partners such as the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb), Musikland Niedersachsen, Jazzfest Berlin and almost 100 professional musicians, the Jazzpilot*innen have reached around 2,500 children and young people nationwide with jazz, improvisation and civic education in playful formats and very personal encounters.

In the field of nine finalists, this time from all over Europe, Justus was the only German participant and by far the finalist who took the boldest risk with his writing.
