- Kurzbeschreibung
The influence of the European Union on the law, politics, the economy and culture of its member states is continuously growing. The course "European integration" introduces students to the essentials of European integration, the political bodies of the European Union, the political economy of the EU and the policies pursued. Students will be made familiar with the fundamental freedoms, the competences of the European Union and their implementation in different fields.

- 1. Historical development of the European integration
- 2. Institutional framework of the European Communities and budget of the European communities
- 3. Decision making within the EU and the political economy
- 4. European legal framework (primary and secondary law, fundamental rights, relationship between national and European law, principles of conferral and proportionality, flexibilisation, legal protection by the ECJ
- 5. The four fundamental freedoms
- 6. Key competences of the EU
- 6.1. Common agricultural policy
- 6.2. Cohesion policy
- 6.3. Competition policy
- 6.4. EU Trade policy
- 6.5. Economic and monetary policy
- 6.6. The financial market and the Euro
- 6.7. Common development cooperation

Wissensverbreiterung
Students who have successfully studied this module have a broad and deep knowledge of the system of the European Union. This includes the history of the integration process, the various policies the EU stands for.
Wissensvertiefung
They understand how European integration affects member states, corporate players and individuals. Students understand the fundamental freedoms of the internal market. They have an advanced knowledge of key economic policies, such as agricultural policy, cohesion policy, competition policy, monetary policy, fiscal policy.
Students are able to understand the development of the policies, considering the different drivers of developments.

Students are able to apply economic theories in discussing solutions to challenges for the EU.
Students have looked in depth into some policies and understand the intricacies of finding widely accepted solutions

- Bemerkung zur Prüfungsform
Die Portfolioprüfung umfasst insgesamt 100 Punkte und besteht aus einer einstündigen Klausur (K1) sowie einer Hausarbeit (HA). Jedes der zwei Elemente wird mit 50 Punkten gewichtet.
- Prüfungsanforderungen
European integration is a very dynamic and complex process. A real understanding requires reading. The course is therefore very much based on the use of textbook material and material available on the website of the EU.
