Composition, Improvisation & Sound Research
Philipp Gerschlauer is a saxophonist, composer, university lecturer and artistic researcher. At the Institute of Music, he teaches ear training and saxophone.
His artistic research centers on expanding the tonal language of jazz, and of bebop in particular, through microtonality and different tuning systems. Artistic practice is not merely the subject of the research but its central instrument of knowledge: new microtonal playing techniques on the saxophone, intonation concepts, improvisation and composition strategies as well as forms of ensemble interplay are developed, tested, documented and reflected upon in practice.
As part of his doctorate at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna, he explores these questions from the perspective of artistic research. A particular focus is on the physical and aural knowledge that emerges through playing, and on the question of how microtonal musical concepts can be conveyed, jointly negotiated and made learnable in ensemble practice.
The research thus combines artistic practice, reflection and pedagogy. Its results take shape not only in written form but also in improvisations, compositions, concerts, recordings, ensemble processes and new forms of music outreach.
