Artistic Practice & Performance
Pia Marei Hauser is a flutist and dramaturg specializing in contemporary music. Her artistic work moves between solo playing, ensemble practice and the development of interdisciplinary concert formats, with a particular focus on space, perception and presence. She performs at international concerts and festivals, works regularly with composers from all over the world and has premiered more than one hundred works, from solo pieces to large ensembles.
In addition to her position as a lecturer for special tasks at the Institute of Music, she teaches music outreach and artistic research at the University of Music Münster.
Her doctorate at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen explores the motif of darkness in new music for solo flute.
The starting point is darkness as an archetypal motif and a central topos of new music, for example in the work of Salvatore Sciarrino. The references to this theme identified in his works for solo flute provide the point of departure for the question of how far other composers also address darkness in this context. With a view to various motives for engaging with this subject, particularly those concerning artistic identity, the research provides a multilayered overview of how darkness is shaped in the solo literature for flute and analyzes selected works of the 20th century in depth.
In order to continuously expand the repertoire in this field in the 21st century as well, Hauser regularly awards composition commissions for solo flute alongside her academic research, exploring darkness and questions of artistic identity in music.
