We are committed to a strong community and address current social challenges. Our self-image goes far beyond the mere imparting of knowledge – we attach particular importance to promoting social responsibility, commitment and critical thinking. To this end, we create meeting places that offer students, lecturers and employees spaces for engagement and are actively committed to sustainability, diversity, democracy and health. In our interdisciplinary collaboration, we carry out practical projects and research work in cooperation with non-profit organizations, public institutions and companies to bring about positive changes in society. Our goal goes beyond training highly qualified graduates – we form active citizens who unite together for a better future and make a lasting contribution to the community.

Our Caprivi Lounge – also known as CaLo for short – is a meeting place and enables around 200 different events every year where lecturers, students and external parties come together.

Fields of action
Sustainability plays a central role at our Faculty as we work towards a green future. The central sustainability working group is dedicated intensively to this topic and supports Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences in assuming its responsibility for sustainable development. We are proud that eleven of our 25 working group members come directly from our Faculty. The student initiative Sustainable Engagement Osnabrück (NEO) has its origins at the Faculty of BMSS and brings momentum to sustainable issues with numerous campaigns. This shows that sustainable thinking and action are deeply rooted in our university culture.
The anchoring of sustainable topics is also reflected in our academic structure, where teaching content is increasingly adapted to this topic. This is even reflected in the renaming of an entire course of study, which now has a clear international and sustainable focus under the title “International Economics and Sustainability”.
The topic of social engagement is also strongly promoted at the BMSS Faculty. Through the central project for social engagement, Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences promotes activities inside and outside the university, thus enabling numerous new initiatives and projects. Most recently, for example, “Balu und Du” and the “Osnabrück Democracy Forum” were made possible at the Faculty. We firmly believe that commitment can make a significant contribution to a vibrant society.
We are actively committed to social engagement not only theoretically but also in teaching. One example is our own module on the topic of “Community Engagement” in the Public Management degree program. Here we give our students the tools and inspiration to actively contribute to shaping a socially responsible society.
As a Faculty, we actively promote democracy and not only convey it with theoretical knowledge, but also make it tangible. With our Osnabrück Democracy Forum, in which around ten people from the BMSS Faculty are involved, we deal with current topics relating to democracy in Germany and Europe as part of the event. We enter into an open dialogue with Osnabrück society.
Our wide range of block weeks makes it possible to deal intensively with the various facets of democracy. Whether during international block weeks in which we explore the democracy of other nations, or on excursions to Brussels, for example. We are going even further and are currently building a new platform module on the topic of democracy.
For us, health promotion is not just an idea, but is actively shaped. With around 15 study programs related to health, we have strong expertise in this area. This expertise also flows into the Osnabrück Health Campus of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences and Osnabrück University, where “health care is being redesigned”. Science, health care companies, churches and politics come together to develop and test innovative care concepts for the region.
In addition, the German Network for Quality Development in Nursing (DNQP) is led by lecturers and Faculty members. This network has the overarching goal of improving the quality of care based on practice and expert standards in all areas of care.
There are currently six research projects in the field of health dealing with current issues.
