Prof. Dr. Petia Genkova is a professor at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences in the field of business psychology. She has been working in the field of science for more than 20 years and is a recognised expert in the fields of diversity, gender and interculturality.
Petia Genkova, Prof. Dr. phil. habil., is a professor of business psychology at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. She heads several research projects that focus on intercultural competence, intercultural communication and cooperation, the experience and health and satisfaction of people with a migration background as well as the topic of diversity. Her research interests lay on the areas of interculturality (intercultural competence, global virtual world, acculturation, diversity and digitization) and positive psychology and personality development (work-life balance, stress and health management, stress, migration and success, expatriation and personality development). All these subject areas are investigated internationally, considering both culture-comparative and intercultural perspectives. Particular attention is paid to the identification, analysis and promotion of competencies as cross-sector success factors.
Especially important is the research project "Cult-Euro-1: Validation of a measuring instrument for general and Western European culture-specific intercultural competence", funded by the VIP+ program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), in the context of which she is developing and validating a measuring instrument for general and culture-specific intercultural competence. In the project “utilize and apply diversity” (DNA, funded by BMBF), she examined diversity management in the STEM industry and the STEM department at German universities. Although the STEM industry is growing faster and plays a crucial role for Germany as a business location, it has serious shortcomings in the area of diversity management. In the international research projects Diverschance_East, Fair_Future and Edu_Chance (funded by BMBF) she analyzes global competencies and challenges through diversity and digitization in the economy and education in an innovative Europe. The focus of these projects is in particular on international investigation of interdisciplinary skills as well as on the generation of follow-up projects in the European research framework program Horizon Europe. In addition, in the project "Ready for a colorful world" (funded by the Lower-Saxony Ministry of Research and Culture), she creates micro-interventions as open educational resources, which are intended to strengthen the promotion of skills for dealing with a changing world of work in the long term. In addition to these nationally funded research projects, Prof. Genkova is a member of the Management Board of the COST Action "Digitalization and Redefinition of Work in Later Life" (funded by the EU Commission) and leads a research network with currently 34 researchers from 23 countries.
The results of Prof. Genkova's various research projects contribute to the various lectures and her diverse consulting activities. As a professor and lecturer at various universities and through her parallel work as a consultant for private companies and public institutions, she held more than 270 courses, plus a large number of training courses, coaching and seminars with various group sizes (10 to 600 people) and target groups (teaching students, Students of: education, cultural economics, media and communication, political science, psychology in various areas, business administration, computer science, administrative economics, police and federal police, Bundeswehr officers, authorities; business representatives and management).
In addition to her academic activities, Prof. Genkova is a member of the board of the German Female Academics Association, deputy chairwoman of the Women's Council North-Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), delegate in the NRW Media Commission, chairwoman of the section Political Psychology and spokeswoman for the Equal Opportunities Committee of the Professional Association of German Psychologists (BDP). She is also a member of a large number of other professional and practical associations and acts as an expert for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Science Council, the Swiss National Science Foundation and international journals.
In 2018, Prof. Genkova was awarded the Höffmann Science Prize for Intercultural Competence for her life's work for her scientific achievements and in particular for the extraordinary combination of basic and application-oriented research.
