The CAMELOT Tool (CochrAne qualitative MEthodological LimitatiOns Tool) – A New Evidence-Based Instrument for Assessing Methodological Limitations in Qualitative Research
Qualitative evidence syntheses (QES) or qualitative systematic reviews are gaining increasing importance as a means of integrating qualitative research into decision-making processes across various domains, such as guideline development. Being able to critically assess the methodological strengths and weaknesses of primary studies is essential in this context. The CAMELOT tool was developed to support such evaluations. It provides researchers with a structured and transparent method to systematically assess methodological limitations in qualitative studies. While a wide range of tools is currently available for evaluating qualitative research, only a few are evidence-based, and their goals often differ significantly.
Even for those whose own research primarily follows quantitative approaches, understanding the methodological quality of qualitative research is becoming increasingly relevant. Qualitative studies provide valuable insights into experiences, perspectives, and contexts that can complement quantitative findings and offer a more comprehensive understanding of complex issues. The ability to assess the methodological limitations of qualitative studies is relevant for anyone who seeks to critically examine and integrate findings from diverse research approaches into their work. CAMELOT can help users professionally evaluate the credibility and value of qualitative research.
This workshop offers a unique opportunity to get to know the new CAMELOT tool, presented by Heather M. Munthe-Kaas from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, who co-developed the tool as part of the CAMELOT Development Group.
If you are interested in participating, please register by September 5, 2025, by sending an email to: talentakademie.health-living@hs-osnabrueck.de.
The workshop will take place online on September 9, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM (CEST).

At the doctoral colloquium, doctoral students and, if they wish, their supervising professors from the area of Health & Living come together once a semester to discuss current issues relating to their doctorate.
Participants have the opportunity to present their doctoral topics, discuss current problems or, for example, simply practise their disputation in front of an audience. The results are discussed together and approaches to solutions are worked out.
The doctoral colloquium is open to all doctoral students and their supervisors at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences from the overarching topic area of Health & Living.
Interested parties are welcome to join us at any time.
We welcome registrations at talentakademie.health-living@hs-osnabrueck.de
Past Events
Modern care is based on scientific knowledge - but how can it be effectively integrated into everyday practice? Patients often do not receive the best possible care because new research findings are difficult to translate into practice.
In this event, we will look at how expert standards and guidelines serve as the basis for evidence-based decisions and how digital decision support systems can provide targeted support for caregivers. In particular, the use of artificial intelligence opens up new possibilities for providing relevant information in real time and making informed decisions. Collaboration with universities and research institutions can also help strengthen the link between theory and practice.
In addition to exciting presentations, we offer space for discussion and the exchange of personal experiences. Take advantage of this opportunity to network with experts and colleagues to develop new approaches to evidence-based care.
Date: Wednesday, 10 April 2025
