Special features of the module

The module is carried out outside the university in a company or a research or educational institution. Special requirements regarding contractual coordination with the company or research or educational institution must be observed (study regulations).

Brief description

Successful professional activity in the desired occupational field requires the ability to work on and solve defined problems largely independently using scientific methods. In a project, students apply the special and interdisciplinary qualifications they have acquired so far to an exemplary task. The project is realized in cooperation with companies and institutions from the professional field or in connection with third-party funded projects. The project and the Master's thesis should be linked together. However, both are graded separately.

Teaching and learning outcomes

As a rule, the module goes through the following steps.

1. selection of a question from the area of the respective Master's field

2. selection of a company, a research or educational institution outside the university, selection of the supervisor at the university

3. definition of the rough objectives of the project in consultation with the company or research and educational institution and the university supervisor

4. conclusion of contract, start of the project on site

5. on site: specification of the project objectives, clarification of the framework conditions and resources as well as the time structure and project schedule

6. on site: planning and design of the communication process and controlling

7. after 6 weeks at the latest, submission of a detailed project and work plan agreed with all participants

8. implementation of the project, optionally with interim meetings of all participants

9. confirmation of the implementation of the transfer project by the participants, submission of the final report

Overall workload

The total workload for the module is 900 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

Remark on the assessment methods

It is possible to extend the project to a Master's thesis. The project and Master's thesis are graded separately.

The ungraded examination (APS) is an exposé which presents the background, principles and objectives of the transfer project.  The exposé should include a time schedule, resource planning and possibly individual work packages. It should be created in the first six weeks of the project and must be coordinated with the people involved on the practice and university side.

Knowledge Broadening

After completing the project, the students have significantly broadened their knowledge, as they have experienced the solution to a research or development question using a concrete example. They have learned which boundary conditions, difficulties and "pitfalls" etc. occur or can occur in the implementation of FundE projects in corporate reality. Furthermore, they have gained knowledge of how communication and coordination work in companies or research institutes etc. at the various hierarchical levels.  They have also learned how projects are organized, adapted or, if necessary, abandoned and rethought.

Knowledge deepening

Students have acquired knowledge in the course of working on a project on a specific topic from an area of the Master's degree program, which is immediately consolidated through direct application and linking to a FundE question and problem solution. The specific knowledge acquired varies from case to case and from degree programme to degree programme and depending on the specialization.

Knowledge Understanding

Skills - instrumental competence
Students are able to apply their knowledge and skills in the processing of new tasks specific to the profession.

Skills - communicative competence
Students are able to define, conceptualize and critically analyze complex professional topics and communicate with experts at a professional level.

Skills - systemic competence
Students are able to carry out research- or application-oriented projects largely independently and to acquire new knowledge and skills independently.

Application and Transfer

The concept and basic features of the module are designed for the generation, use and application of knowledge. Due to the outsourcing of the module to the corporate sector or to research and educational institutes, it is possible to readjust objectives and tasks after 6 weeks at the latest by a written proposal.

Academic Innovation

In the module, students work on a research and development project and thus generate scientific added value in the respective content context and sometimes even further innovations.

Communication and Cooperation

The communication skills of the students are strengthened through the activities in the company or in the research or educational institute, new forms of communication are discovered and applied and any obstacles to communication can be reduced or at least recognized. The cooperation in the transfer module should lead to the Master's thesis and expands the network and knowledge for possible professional activities after graduation.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

Working in practice strengthens the professionalism in the later career entry, as experience is gained.   Particularly in companies or institutes that work in a research-oriented manner, the scientific self-image in the respective field of work is strengthened, adjusted and sharpened.
