Brief description

A semester abroad is an exciting opportunity for students to gain international experience, discover new cultures and broaden their academic horizons. The semester abroad lasts one semester and is completed at an accredited university abroad. During this period, students can take subject-related modules in the field of landscaping. This gives them the opportunity to familiarise themselves with new teaching methods, improve their foreign language skills and make international contacts.

Teaching and learning outcomes

The Bachelor's modules to be taken complement the content of the Landscape Architecture degree programme. For this purpose, the selected modules are indicated with a learning agreement before the start of the semester abroad and approved by the module promoter.

Overall workload

The total workload for the module is 900 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

Recommended prior knowledge

Language skills (usually English language skills) according to the required level of the foreign university (usually B1/B2)

Knowledge Broadening

While studying at a foreign university, students acquire new specialised knowledge and perspectives on the subject area.

Knowledge deepening

Students can establish links between their newly acquired specialist knowledge from the semester abroad and their previous knowledge in the field of the Landscape Architecture degree programme. They can compare and contrast their study experiences in different cultural and institutional contexts.

Knowledge Understanding

The personal and professional experience gained during a semester abroad, the intercultural skills acquired and the enhanced language skills can be used by students in their future career planning. This enables them to critically reflect on the specialised knowledge acquired at home and abroad and leads to an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach to problem solving. These study experiences open up new perspectives on the field of landscaping.

Application and Transfer

Students can effectively utilise the skills, knowledge and experience acquired during their stay abroad in both their personal and professional lives. This includes above all: the acquired language skills, intercultural competence and academic experience. This contributes to personal development, but also to networking in a professional context. By consciously reflecting on the semester abroad and applying the skills gained in a targeted manner, students can use and transfer the experience effectively in their future lives.

Academic Innovation

By studying at another university, students gain access to new resources and research in different environments, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and experience cultural diversity as a source of inspiration. By consciously taking advantage of the unique opportunities offered by a semester abroad, students can help drive scientific innovation and contribute to solving global challenges.

Communication and Cooperation

Intercultural competence is strengthened during a semester abroad at a foreign university. It includes the ability to interact effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds. This includes respect and tolerance for different value systems, behaviour and communication styles. Professional communication is crucial in the academic environment, from managing administrative tasks to dealing with fellow students and hosts, and promotes intercultural understanding.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

Academic self-understanding during a semester abroad refers to the way in which students define and pursue their academic interests, goals and methods during their stay abroad. Students can not only improve their own academic skills and knowledge, but also make a positive contribution to the international academic community.
