Brief description

The design of open spaces with plants is a characteristic skill in landscape architecture. Both the functionally correct use and the aesthetic-artistic approach are taught as a unit. Existing plantings and planting plans are interpreted and assessed, and students formulate their own planting ideas and illustrate them in discussions and drawings. These ideas are implemented in designs and planting plans, aesthetic and functional requirements are reconciled with cost issues and maintenance requirements in the planning process and plans are designed appropriately and thematically (signatures, layout, use of IT).

Teaching and learning outcomes

  1. study, interpretation and assessment of existing plantings and planting plans.
  2. examining and evaluating the function and significance of plantings.
  3. explaining the tasks and functions of shrubs, perennials and summer flowers in the context of a planting.
  4. carrying out and discussing planting designs
  5. illustration and practice of the formal and aesthetic requirements for planting designs and planting plans.
  6. calculation of planning and production costs.
  7. practising the use of computer programs (CAD, plant databases).
  8. quality requirements for plants

Overall workload

The total workload for the module is 150 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

Recommended prior knowledge

Plants and vegetation, Plant Materials - Basics

Knowledge Broadening

After successfully completing this module, students will have a broad knowledge of the content, presentation methods, tasks and possible applications of planting designs and the resulting planting plans as well as the costs incurred in their realization.

Knowledge deepening

The students have acquired in-depth knowledge of the characteristics and possible uses of woody plants, perennials and summer flowers, of site requirements, combinations from an aesthetic and functional point of view and of the possibilities of representation in plans.

Knowledge Understanding

After successfully completing this module, students will be able to independently develop planting concepts, select suitable plants, determine the arrangement and quantities of plants and sketch their designs at different levels to illustrate their planning intentions.

Application and Transfer

Students can calculate costs and make statements about future maintenance.

Academic Innovation

Students are able to analyze and critically evaluate existing planting designs and existing plantings.

Communication and Cooperation

The students can explain their planting designs to a larger group of people and argue for them in the discussion, but also accept and express criticism in a positive way.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

Students can apply the skills required in professional practice to design and present planting designs based on the respective task. They will be able to select plants from the common range, implement the client's wishes and present them using current sketching and presentation methods.
