Special features of the module

The module is compulsory elective subject 3 of the branch-specific specialisation offer in the degree programme Business Administration in the Health Care Sector.

Brief description

The module conveys an understanding of the central role and importance of the functions "procurement" and "logistics" for the functionality and economic efficiency of hospitals. It combines management-related conceptual knowledge as well as specific application examples and innovation approaches from clinical practice with current trends, in particular sustainability and digitalisation.

In addition, current information technologies and their possible applications for implementing the digitalisation of procurement and logistics in the hospital environment are discussed.

  1. Introduction to logistics and procurement in hospitals (importance/ trends)
  2. Logistics as a management approach for hospitals (infrastructure, networks, material flow/information flow organisation system)
  3. Functional logistics systems in hospitals (process and phase-specific)
  4. Procurement in hospitals (processes, strategies and structures)
  5. eProcurement and eSupply Chain Management in hospitals (information technology concepts and technologies, application examples)

The total workload for the module is 150 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

100 hours of the workload are allocated to the contents logistics and procurement in the hospital,

  50 hours of the workload are allocated to the contents of eProcurement and eSupply Chain Management.

If an excursion is carried out (e.g. visit to a hospital or logistics centre), the lecturer-bound workload is as follows:

   30 hours - lecture - present; 

   10 hours - supervised small groups online or present;

     5 hours – excursion - present

Students who have successfully completed this module will be able to apply the methods they have learnt to specific decision-making areas of procurement and logistics and systematically develop solutions to problems in the context of healthcare facilities, in particular hospitals.

Students who have successfully completed this module derive and define research questions in the subject areas of procurement and logistics in hospitals; the students explain and justify the operationalisation of research in these subject areas.

Communication and Cooperation

Students who have successfully completed this module will be able to use various oral, written and technical forms of communication (discussion, presentation, lecture, essay) to explain processes and structures of procurement and logistics to experts and interested parties and develop them further in a cooperative manner.
