Brief description

Content is king. Media and interaction designers need writing skills to give formal design appealing and effective content. Form does not follow content, or vice versa; rather, form and content arise from the interaction between design and text. Creative writing is not only required when designers are at a loss for words, but also from the initial idea through to the finished concept and its final implementation.

Teaching and learning outcomes

1. Introduction to creative writing for functional texts – classification and differentiation from literary and journalistic writing.
2. Relevant theories on different genres of creative writing.
3. Insight into career fields for creative writers – from screenwriters to bloggers to advertising copywriters.
4. Individual exercises using practical examples of tasks for interpreting other people's texts and reflecting on your own.
5. Specific, practical projects on the interplay between creative writing and media/interaction design.

Overall workload

The total workload for the module is 150 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

Knowledge Broadening

Students who have successfully completed this module will have acquired comprehensive basic knowledge of creative writing for functional texts. They will be familiar with the common theories, methods and design principles and will be able to recognise significant developments and requirements.

Knowledge deepening

Through macrostructural analyses, students acquire detailed knowledge in selected areas of creative writing such as storyboards, weblogs and body copy.

Knowledge Understanding

In short presentations, students present impact analyses in a well-structured and strongly media-supported form. During the presentation, they subject a selected work to the rules, concepts and discussion results developed in the course. Individual presentation skills are jointly assessed and improved after the presentations.

Application and Transfer

Students apply the knowledge they have acquired in the production and evaluation of their own practical work. The experimental projects are carried out in small groups. Students expand their design skills to include the professional creation of functional texts, thereby developing comprehensive content skills.

Communication and Cooperation

During the internships, students develop strong teamwork skills through conceptual work and production in small groups.
