Brief description

In this module, students learn the basics of descriptive animation, especially for the in-depth illustration of aesthetic, ergonomic and technical contexts of a product or system. The students learn to use and apply different animation tools.

Teaching and learning outcomes

Introduction to the basics of animation on the PC (tools, methods, hardware, software)

Differences in preparing data for production or animation

Differentiation of different production formats

Object Modelling, Scene Modelling (Scenes & Objects, Modelling, Sculpting & Painting)

Setting up light sources

Animation & Rigging, Physics

Animation (Storytelling, Storyboarding (conceptual storyboard, pesentation storyboard, production storyboard))

Production rendering, postproduction, video editing (rendering, compositing, motion tracking & masking)

Working with materials, structures, textures

Knowledge Broadening

The students can use the essential basic concepts of established animation tools and classify their underlying scientific approaches in the general context of the subject. They are able to implement a product or system in a CAD animation tool in such a way that viewers can understand and comprehend the content.

The students are able to understand the principle and the methodology of a CAD animation tool and to apply it in basics.

They can use the learned tool sensibly and illustrate complex relationships through animations.

Knowledge deepening

Students who have successfully completed this module are able to explain complex products in the form of animations. They are able to use highly complex software purposefully and effectively to illustrate products in the form of animations and moving images. The students have learned that animations of products significantly simplify the understanding of the recipient. They are able to create and produce comprehensible animations that conform to the target group.

Knowledge Understanding

Students can weigh up which form of presentation is the most appropriate in a context. They can assess whether a possible implementation is actually the most adequate and whether the goal is achieved. They reflect on existing implementations and can assess whether they make sense.

Application and Transfer

The students can develop animations from conception to implementation, taking into account the technical complexity. The students can apply existing procedures and methods, but also question them and develop their own derivations. They use what they have learned in the module 'Animation' to develop their own procedures based on this.

Academic Innovation

The students can design methods and procedures that are suitable for systematically working on and solving animation problems in practice. The students develop innovative approaches to the development of animations by using their didactic and methodological repertoire in a target group-oriented and diverse manner.

Communication and Cooperation

Students learn how to solve problems together, both on their own initiative and with guidance from the course. They learn to work together in interdisciplinary teams on animation projects. The students learn to use animation as a meaningful means of communication and to use it in a goal-oriented way.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

The students can also justify the social and economic relevance of animation beyond their own animation-specific style. They can professionally apply and justify what they have learned from the module.
