Brief description

In this module, students gain an overview of activities in the area of food security. They understand the importance of crisis and risk management and the positive influence of a functioning crisis and risk management system on food security in the supply chain.

Teaching and learning outcomes

Food security is a key issue in society and can be negatively affected by various influences. In order to minimize these negative influences, businesses and agricultural enterprises require successful risk and crisis management. This module addresses

  1. topics relating to food security
  2. potential risks and crises 
  3. the influence of food quality on the supply chain
  4. the impact of risks and crises on the supply chain, society and the environment
  5. risk and crisis management - methods, analyses and optimization potentials

The standard examination form is a two-hour written exam; deviations from this will be announced in the first four weeks after the start of lectures.

Basic knowledge of the subject is helpful but not required.

Knowledge Broadening

Students gain an overview of activities in the area of food security. The knowldege gained can form the basic of a master thesis and new studies can be developed.

Knowledge deepening

Practical case studies facilitate deepening the knowledge acquired. Students also work on their own case studies and identify potential risks and crises within those supply chains.

Application and Transfer

The knowledge imparted in this module is applied in case studies. By analyzing existing crisis and risk management systems in companies, students filter out positive and negative points and identify any potential for improvement.

Communication and Cooperation

Communication is a decisive factor in the case of risk and crisis management and should be carried out professionally. Students will learn how to communicate crisis and risk management and which media to use. They assess and analyze the effectiveness of different forms of communication.

The required literature will be introduced during the lecture.
