Brief description

An indispensable building block in the construction of buildings is structural engineering. Landscape architects as well as garden and landscape contractors need a specific basic understanding of structural engineering for the design and execution planning and implementation of outdoor facilities. The aim of the module is to provide students with basic knowledge of simple load-bearing structures and to enable them to assess structural calculations required for implementation by a structural engineer.

Teaching and learning outcomes

1 Introduction to engineering mechanics

1.1 Central plane force system
1.2 General plane force system

2 Statically determined systems

2.1 Calculation of reaction forces on a single span beam
2.2 Determination of internal forces on a single-span beam

3 Basic principles of strength theory

3.1 Simple stress calculations due to normal force
3.2 Simple stress calculations due to bending moment
3.3 Simple stress calculations due to bending moment and normal force
3.4 Limitation of excentricity

4 Actions on structures - load assumptions

4.1 Determination of dead loads
4.2 Determination of traffic, wind and snow loads
4.3 Determination of water and earth pressure

Overall workload

The total workload for the module is 150 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

Recommended prior knowledge

Basic knowledge in the field of building materials and building structures in open spaces

Knowledge Broadening

Students who have successfully studied this module will have an insight into structural design, they will understand the basic principles of the load-bearing behavior of structures used in landscaping.

Knowledge deepening

Students who have successfully studied this module will have detailed knowledge in selected topics.

Knowledge Understanding

Students who have successfully studied this module will be able to assess structural calculations by specialist planners, develop force representation and force transmission in a well-founded manner and conclude necessities for the structural implementation of the measure.

Application and Transfer

Students who have successfully completed this module will be able to calculate simple load-bearing structures roughly. They are able to grasp the elaborations of corresponding specialist engineers in an overview and apply their knowledge both as planners and as construction managers.

Academic Innovation

Students who have successfully studied this module will be able to face innovations in the field and apply standards and guidelines for structural considerations.

Communication and Cooperation

Students who have successfully studied this module will be able to discuss and evaluate detailed design solutions with the specialist designer.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

Students who have successfully studied this module will be able to pre-design structural components (single span beams) as part of preliminary design. They apply a range of job-related skills, abilities, techniques and materials to complete standard and advanced tasks.
