Brief description

In research and development in materials science, it is extremely important to be able to effectively navigate specialist publications in English and to understand and evaluate their structure and content in terms of methodology and the interpretation of results. In this module, students learn
- literature research using scientific publication databases and their search mechanisms
- read and critically scrutinize scientific literature
- to write their own scientific texts in the form of a manuscript

Teaching and learning outcomes

1) Presentation of selected literature in the field of metals and ceramics research and development
2) Discussion of selected literature in the field of metals and ceramics research and development
3) Research on a specific topic of metals and ceramic research and development
4) Writing a manuscript based on own data (bachelor thesis, project or student research project)

Overall workload

The total workload for the module is 150 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

Recommended prior knowledge

The module requires in-depth knowledge of metals and ceramics, as acquired in previous Master's modules on materials.

Knowledge Broadening

Students get to know important scientific publication systems and their requirements for the publication of research results and can select specialist journals for their own publications on the basis of suitable criteria.

Knowledge deepening

Students have knowledge and understanding of the way in which scientific publications are structured in terms of content and form. They have in-depth knowledge of new research approaches and results in their subject area.

Knowledge Understanding

Students are able to carry out a topic-centered and targeted literature research to obtain subject-specific information, to evaluate different literature sources with regard to scientific standards and to create a scientific text based on them.

Academic Innovation

Through critical engagement with literature and their own research results, students gain insights for scientific innovations. They use these insights to support progress in their field of study.

Communication and Cooperation

Students who have successfully completed this module will be able to communicate with more experienced colleagues and specialists from the relevant specialist societies at a professional level. Students are able to critically reflect on specialist presentations and contribute to discussions at a high professional level.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

Students can evaluate and reflect on their own publications of scientific findings in the overall context of the state of science.
