Brief description

Advanced Illustration aims to give participants a broader understanding of illustration. Prerequisites for the course are: basic drawing experience, interest in new approaches to creating images and scenes.
Various drawing techniques and applied approaches are taught in a practical manner. Abstraction, interpretation and association form the focus of the illustrative work.

Teaching and learning outcomes

- Observation of natural phenomena in the great outdoors during excursions to botanical gardens, disused industrial sites or urban areas
- Evaluation of visual impressions of nature and the associated learning of interpretative representation of phenomena with the aid of various materials.
- Exploration of cross-style techniques such as drawing, collage and model/object construction.
- Development of an independent, non-naturalistic style of representation.

Overall workload

The total workload for the module is 150 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

Remark on the assessment methods

The duration of the examination depends on the type and scope of the physical work samples, which are handed in to the lecturer at the end of the course. These works correspond to a learning diary with a focus on drawing, which are structured according to various thematic areas and build on each other.
The minimum scope of the drawings corresponds to 15 DIN A3 pages.

Exam duration and scope

Graded examination:

Project report, written: approx. 10-15 pages, accompanying explanation: approx. 10 minutes
Presentation: approx. 15 minutes
Project report (media): approx. 10-15 pages, accompanying explanation: approx. 10 minutes

Unmarked examination:

  • Experimental work: Experiment: approx. 5 experiments in total

Recommended prior knowledge

- Drawing skills
- Open-mindedness towards unusual approaches and developing new drawing techniques
- Good observational skills
- Proficiency in the basic functions of Photoshop or comparable software

Knowledge Broadening

Students who have successfully completed this module will have acquired comprehensive basic knowledge of the aesthetic design principles of illustration.

Knowledge deepening

Through macrostructural analyses, students acquire detailed knowledge in selected areas of illustration.

Knowledge Understanding

Students apply the knowledge they have acquired in the production and evaluation of their own practical work. The experimental projects are carried out in small groups.

Application and Transfer

In short presentations, students present impact analyses in a well-structured and strongly media-supported form. During the presentation, they subject a selected work to the rules, concepts and discussion results developed in the course. Individual presentation skills are jointly assessed and improved after the presentations. During the internships, students develop strong team skills through conceptual work and production in small groups.
