Brief description

The concept, the design and the constructional implementation are among the key tasks of the designer. Knowledge of the management of intellectual property means essential competences in the economic traffic. Design is not only creative services within the framework of product development. It is becoming a strategic element in the companies and market. This knowledge require designers to adequate reasoning of their work and their economic impact.

Teaching and learning outcomes

Overview of industrial property protection Design law (in particular design and copyright law). Basic features of patent and utility model law. Cooperation between designers and clients (licensing contract law) - project management - brand - management methods - presentation.

Knowledge Broadening

The students receive a basic knowledge and practice-related overview of design-law and management-based questions and problems as well as the confident handling of corresponding argumentation patterns.

Knowledge deepening

Students who have successfully studied this module have detailed knowledge of dealing with legal aspects of design. They can position design pointedly in the economic environment.

Knowledge Understanding

In this module, students have learned the basics of design law and related areas, they know about the importance of design law negotiations, procedures and defence of their rights. 
They learn professional design management, project planning and communication with other disciplines. They learn different tools for project management

Application and Transfer

Students are able to argue design not only on an aesthetic level, but also from a legal, organisational and economic perspective.

Academic Innovation

Students learn the basics of design law and design management, but are also able to put what they have learned into new contexts, abstract it and develop new methods.

Communication and Cooperation

Students who have successfully studied this module present complex market-relevant ideas in a well-structured and coherent form to different groups of people with different objectives. They are able to argue legal aspects confidently.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

The participants of the lecture know about the economic position of industrial design and its influence. They can apply and discuss design holistically. They can confidently represent design in the areas of planning, organisation, management, control and communication.
