Mission Statement

Due to globalisation and especially the development of the European Union, the landscaping industry is becoming ever more international. A landscaping professional is likely to be involved in international projects or at least have to communicate with peers from other countries. In such circumstances, English is the lingua franca.

Content

ENGLISH FOR LANDSCAPE PROFESSIONALS is a subject-specific language course for landscape architecture students studying for a qualification in the landscaping industries.Working through a landscaping project from project inception to completion fulfilling all tasks associated with such project including site visits, design brief, planning, negotiating, meetings, design documentation, tendering, preparing contracts, implementation and completion. Emphasis is placed on communication and vocabulary learning.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge Broadening
The students understand the contracting system in the United Kingdom and have the language tools necessary to fullfil the expectations of a landscaping professional.
Knowledge Deepening
The students have the gramatical und lexical knowledge to participate in the industry. This includes the methods and topics of the landscaping industry.
Instrumental Skills and Competences
The students are able to extract information from a client about their desires for form and function of their garden and transfer these into realisable designs and implementation documentation. Essential standard competencies from Open Space Planning and Landscape Engineering are developed und used. Client communication, design principles, business communications, presentations, design specifications, bill of quantities, official acceptance.
Communicative Skills and Competences
Compentent communication with clients, contractors, sub-contractors, consultants, local authorities in both formal and informal contexts.
Systemic Skills and Competences
The ability for the students to practice their profession in an English-speaking country.
