Brief description

Technical inventions and their protection by patents and utility models as well as new developments in the aesthetic field and their protection by design protection are indispensable for the efficiency and success of the modern economy. Engineers and technically oriented business people are regularly confronted with industrial property rights in their professional practice.

This does not presuppose that they themselves become inventive, but that they may also be confronted with patents, utility models and design rights of third parties and thus with a possible infringement of property rights. In addition, the management of product innovations is increasingly in demand, which also includes the definition of legal strategies, including the placement of strategically sensible industrial property rights in Germany and abroad.

Teaching and learning outcomes

  1. Overview of the most important types of property rights
  2. Searches in the prior art using databases in Germany and abroad
  3. Course of the patent grant, utility model registration and design registration procedure
  4. Structure of a patent application
  5. Subject matter of a protected patent
  6. Effect and scope of protection of a patent
  7. Acts of patent infringement
  8. Patentability of inventions in the field of computer programs, genetic engineering and biotechnology,
    medical procedures
