Brief description

Design is the central task in the process of product development. Basic knowledge of mechanical engineering is the modelling and visualisation of components in CAD and the merging into assemblies. In addition, the basics of technical drawing are taught. The design and the sensible use of bearings as a basic machine element is complemented.

Teaching and learning outcomes

1. Construction segments, construction types

2. Presentation of technical products
2.1 Basic rules
2.2 Creation of technical freehand drawings
2.3 Dimensioning strategies
2.4 Tolerances and fits
2.5 Shape and position tolerances

3. CAD
3.1 Basics of volume modeling
3.2 Basic CAD functions and commands
3.3 Object orientation, parametrics and associativity
3.4 Assembly of simple parts into assemblies

4. Roller bearing
4.1 Application areas of the different types
4.2 Design of bearings
4.3 Support forces and modified service life calculation

Overall workload

The total workload for the module is 150 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

Exam duration and scope

As part of the assignment, you must create 2–4 drawings and 1–2 CAD assemblies.

Knowledge Broadening

Students have basic knowledge in the presentation of technical products. Students can model individual parts in a CAD system and are able to assemble them into assemblies.

Application and Transfer

Students can generate data and documents for production from simple technical components.
