Brief description

The best knowledge of outdoor plants is a prerequisite for functional and attractive planting designs. It is important to practice recognizing woody plants and perennials in autumn and winter, as this is the time for planting and the special characteristics and appeal of many plants are revealed at this time. Aspects such as winter-green foliage, autumn color, fruit, bark and buds, winter structure of grasses, ferns and flowering perennials are the subjects of this module.

Overall workload

The total workload for the module is 150 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

Recommended prior knowledge

Plant Materials - Basics

Knowledge Understanding

Students can use identification literature to identify usual and unusual perennials and woody plants.

Application and Transfer

Through this module, students acquire the ability to argue about the characteristics and distinguishing features of perennials and woody plants and their potential usage.

Academic Innovation

Students will be able to assess the range of woody plants and perennials in terms of breadth and depth and derive recommendations for stock development.

Communication and Cooperation

Students can assess the characteristics of woody plants and perennials relevant to their usage over the seasons, place them in a design context and communicate them to other students.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

After successfully completing this module, students will be able to apply important, job-related methods to recognize woody plants and shrubs even in winter and to assess their suitability for usage.
