Requirements for the recruitment of professors

Conditions governing the appointment of professors

The conditions governing the appointment of professors are regulated in § 25 NHG*. These comprise:

  • a university degree
  • suitability to teach/educate as confirmed by practical experience
  • a particular aptitude for conducting profound academic work proven, as a rule, by an
  • above-average PhD and
  • exceptional performances in the application or development of scientific findings and methods in professional practice lasting a minimum of five years, at least three years of which must have been outside higher education.

These formal requirements are usually fleshed out in the wording of the job advertisement in line with the profile paper of the professorship.

Further information:

Applications by women are particularly welcomed. Part-time employment or an interruption to the PhD examination procedure for family-related reasons do not preclude employment. Female applicants may contact the Equal Opportunities Office for more information (+49 (0)541 969-2965,

Severely handicapped persons will receive preferential treatment if equally suitable.

The regular teaching commitment is 18 hours per week per semester.

Remuneration is determined by scale system W regulations in conjunction with Lower Saxony Performance-based University Pay Regulation and Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences guidelines.

A professorship carried out on a secondary basis (§ 29 NHG) is a special kind of professorship involving a teaching commitment with a minimum of four and a maximum of eight hours per week per semester. Remuneration is negotiable. The conditions governing appointment and the appointment process correspond to those for professorships carried out on a primary basis. Professorships carried out on a secondary basis differ from those carried out on a primary basis (also in the form of part-time employment) in that the holder is not usually assigned any research activities. The exercise of research activities is replaced by the practical employment carried out on a primary basis.

A complete application dossier comprises the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae with a list of publications, if applicable
  • School-leaving certificate from the last general education school(s) attended
  • Final examination certificate (Diplom, Bachelor, etc.)
  • Degree certificate and PhD certificate
  • Supporting documents (preferably references) confirming previous employment
